About the role

As the next Grand Region signals engineer, you would be responsible for:

  • Coordinating and enhancing region traffic signal operations and maintenance
  • Providing and coordinating technical expertise on traffic signals and other electronic traffic devices
  • Advancing the arterial management of traffic operations throughout the region
  • Serving as a key member of the region’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program and the operations of the West Michigan Transportations Operations Center
  • Collaborating with others on the Traffic Safety and Operations team, along with the region’s transportation service centers
  • Supporting Connected and Automated Vehicle and ITS advancements in the region
  • Pilot project efforts focused on safety and mobility

Responsibilities

Coordinating and enhancing region traffic signal operations and maintenance

Providing and coordinating technical expertise on traffic signals and other electronic traffic devices

Advancing the arterial management of traffic operations throughout the region

Serving as a key member of the region’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program and the operations of the West Michigan Transportations Operations Center

Collaborating with others on the Traffic Safety and Operations team, along with the region’s transportation service centers

Supporting Connected and Automated Vehicle and ITS advancements in the region

Pilot project efforts focused on safety and mobility

Requirements

The MDOT Grand Region covers 13 counties in beautiful west Michigan, which include everything from the Manistee National Forest (more than 540,000 acres), endless white sandy beaches, innumerable public and private camping areas, thousands of miles of urban and rural bike trails, and the city of Grand Rapids, which has a vibrant arts and culture scene.

There are inland lakes, huge rivers, gentle streams everywhere, and, of course, Lake Michigan. It is an exciting time in Grand Region. This position will have opportunities to be involved with the latest transportation technologies and pilot project efforts focused on safety and mobility.

Qualifications

  • Education: Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.
  • Experience:
    • Transportation Engineer 9: No specific type or amount is required.
    • Transportation Engineer 10: One year of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 9.
    • Transportation Engineer P11: Two years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 10.
    • Transportation Engineer 12: Three years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11.
  • Alternate Education and Experience: Possession of a registered professional engineer license as required by the State of Michigan may be substituted for 6 months of experience at the Transportation Engineer 9-12 levels. This substitution may only be used once for any employee for qualification of appointment or early reclassification.

Required skills include:

  • Knowledge of traffic signal systems and operations
  • Ability to coordinate and enhance traffic signal operations and maintenance
  • Technical expertise in traffic signals and other electronic traffic devices
  • Experience with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
  • Collaborative skills with the Traffic Safety and Operations team and transportation service centers
  • Ability to support Connected and Automated Vehicle and ITS advancements
  • Experience with pilot project efforts focused on safety and mobility

Pay

The salary listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (9) level through the maximum rate at the advanced (12) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.
