Transportation Designer 2

About the role

DOWL is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Transportation Designer 2 to join our growing team and help shape a wide range of transportation projects—from bike paths and sidewalks to highways and interchanges. In this role, you'll take on moderately complex design and drafting tasks, contribute to roadway layouts, 3D modeling, and assist with cost estimates, construction quantities, technical reports, and project specifications. Working under the guidance of a licensed professional engineer, you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience while expanding your skills in CAD drafting, geometric design, and transportation engineering principles.

Responsibilities

• Perform moderately complex design and drafting tasks for transportation projects, including roadway layouts and 3D modeling.
• Assist with cost estimates, construction quantities, technical reports, and project specifications.
• Perform quality control of basic deliverables.
• Review, interpret, and employ appropriate design guidance from technical memos and reports.
• Produce technical reports, memos, specifications, construction quantity calculations, cost estimates, design documents, and construction plans under limited direction.
• Develop a moderate understanding of scopes, schedules, and budgets; predict level of effort for individual tasks with guidance.
• Monitor results on moderately complex projects.
• Understand and apply design codes such as AASHTO, FHWA, and local client standards.
• Participate in limited direct client interaction, commonly in group settings; respond to emails, attend meetings, and answer questions with limited autonomy.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• 2 years of experience required; 1 year of experience required with an advanced degree.
• EIT/EI certification required.
• Valid driver’s license required (driving is an essential job function).
• Solid understanding of technical fundamentals in transportation engineering.
• Developing proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
• Developing proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation Connect, and OpenRoads (if applicable).
• Basic knowledge of task-specific software (e.g., AutoTurn, GuideSign).
• Advanced understanding of technical writing skills.
• Ability to perform basic technical tasks with limited oversight.
• Team player who follows direction, asks good questions, retains information, and shares knowledge with less experienced colleagues.

Skills
