About the role

This position involves on-site compliance inspection, quality assurance, and progress monitoring for transportation construction projects, with a focus on VDOT or other DOT experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provides on-site compliance inspection, quality assurance, and progress monitoring for conformance to plans, contracts, specifications, and codes.
  • Communicates with and advises contractors of discrepancies and necessary corrective actions to conform to plans and specifications.
  • Maintains project records, including daily diaries documenting work performed by construction contractors, using basic algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations and sketches.
  • Checks materials and material documents to verify testing and sends additional samples to client or testing laboratories as required.
  • Assists with review of payment applications, final inspections, and creation of punchlists.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with clients, contractors, the traveling public, adjacent property owners, other stakeholders, and team members.
  • Ensures highway work zones and traffic control comply with current standards.
  • Performs materials testing, basic surveying, and administrative duties such as daily timesheets, monthly expense reports, and mileage reports.
  • Works on project sites, including standing, sitting, climbing ladders, working at heights, and navigating uneven terrain in various weather conditions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • Construction work experience with a basic understanding of construction means and methods for transportation projects, particularly VDOT or other DOT experience.
  • Experience inspecting projects such as roadway widening, intersection improvements, signalization, bridges, roadway maintenance, streetscape, and utilities.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record; must pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check, DMV driving record check, reference verification, and work history check.
  • OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification (or obtain within 3 months of hire).
  • Working knowledge of basic mathematics, including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric computations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, email, internet navigation, and web-based tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Construction-related training or coursework in road/bridge construction, civil engineering, materials, and tools.
  • Certifications from VDOT such as Intermediate Work Zone Protection, Asphalt Field Level I and II, Soils and Aggregate, Pavement Marking, Nuclear Gauge Safety, Guard Rail Inspector Training, ACI Concrete, and DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control and Stormwater Management.
  • Other relevant certifications including WACEL, ICC, NICET, or MARTCP.

Pay

The base hourly rate for this full-time position is $25.00 to $28.00, with actual compensation determined based on work location, qualifications, experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training.
