Transportation Business Group Data Steward

HDR · Nashville, TN · 2 wk ago
On-siteConsulting$150k–$200k/yrFull-time

About the role

This in-office position can be based in any established HDR office in the United States. The role shapes how data is defined, used, and reused across the Transportation Business Group and HDR. As a Transportation (BG) Data Steward, you will help bring clarity and consistency to how data is defined, shared, and used across all Transportation disciplines and their service lines. This is a leadership role, not an IT or compliance position, playing a key part in enabling better business decisions, data reuse, and project delivery excellence.

The Transportation Data Steward defines how data practices are established, aligned, and sustained across the Transportation Business Group by coordinating and enabling subject matter experts and technical authorities within each domain. This role is ideal for technical leaders who shape "how work gets done" and influence how data supports the business.

This role empowers teams to define data once, understand it consistently, and reuse it confidently across projects, teams, and time.

Why this role matters

Across HDR, data is relied upon to plan work, deliver projects, answer questions, and make decisions. When data is defined differently across teams, projects, or regions, it becomes harder to trust, reuse, and scale. Teams spend time reconciling definitions, rebuilding datasets, or explaining meanings instead of using data to drive decisions.

Transportation Data Stewardship addresses this by clearly defining business-aligned data terminology and creating shared understanding. This role supports turning data into solutions that teams can confidently use, reuse, and build upon. It reduces confusion, prevents rework, and enables faster, more consistent answers for project delivery, technical staff, and leadership. For HDR, it ensures enterprise and project data is ready to support analytics, automation, and AI in a way that reflects how we work.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and coordinate a network of subject matter experts (SMEs) across the Transportation Business Group to define technical standards, ensuring alignment with Transportation data practices and enterprise expectations.
  • Develop and maintain business-aligned data definitions for key engineering and technical terms that support structured data models, reporting, automation, and AI use cases.
  • Use your technical network to build alignment and consensus around data processes, priorities, and expected use.
  • Promote consistent, responsible use of technical data, including access, data quality, best practices for format, and reuse.
  • Support governance of externally sourced datasets (access, approvals, inventory awareness, storage, and lifecycle considerations).
  • Promote data fluency across the Transportation Business Group.
  • Coordinate with the Technology Director to align data workflows and initiatives with Transportation BG Strategy.
  • Lead change management efforts to drive adoption of data standards, practices, and tools across the Transportation BG.
  • Regularly communicate and collaborate with other Data Stewards, Enterprise Data Science Teams, and Enterprise Data Operations staff.
  • Ensure new tools identified for implementation within the Transportation BG align with data strategy.

Role context

  • Embedded in the Transportation Business Group (not an IT role).
  • Enablement-focused and collaborative.
  • Part of technology leadership, focused on supporting effective project delivery.
  • Connected to a broader Data Steward network.
  • Focused on defining and enabling the use of Transportation and service line data.

Qualifications

Preferred

  • Ten years of strategic leadership experience focused on growing, developing, and leading teams in change management and working with data.
  • Fifteen years of overall experience providing diverse data-centric solutions and services to an organization and the industry.

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, data science, business, computer science, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the Resources engineering industry.
  • Experience in the development and management of diverse teams.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other leaders, operations managers, technical directors, and marketing managers.
  • Commitment to quality, improvement, and HDR values.
  • Active participation in HDR’s employee-owned culture.

Skills

  • Understand how data is delivered, defined, and used in the Transportation industry and on projects.
  • Trusted by peers and leaders; able to translate complex practices into clear, usable guidance.
  • Comfortable making decisions and driving consensus.
  • Strong data fluency and curiosity to keep learning.
  • Solid technical network to tap for feedback and alignment.
  • Demonstrated credibility in data, technology, and delivery practices; able to influence teams through clarity, consistency, and outcomes.
  • Able to clearly communicate the importance of data integrity at all levels of the organization.

This role is designed for established leaders with influence and credibility, not for early-career staff or learning assignments.

What success looks like

  • Establishes repeatable data practices by defining how data is captured, structured, governed, and reused across systems, workflows, and delivery teams.
  • Drives adoption and aligns people, processes, and technology rather than owning technical definitions in isolation.
  • Maintains a Transportation service line data glossary that teams actively use.
  • Becomes a well-known, go-to steward who can train staff and answer data questions.
  • Ensures data definitions and classifications translate into reliable, structured data models and AI tools that answer key questions for leaders and teams.
  • Equips teams with tools to effectively leverage data for project delivery and pursuits.
  • Encourages teams to proactively reference shared definitions instead of creating local terminology.

Reporting structure

This role reports to the Transportation Technology Director, who acts as the Transportation Data Owner.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package promoting employee ownership, health, performance, and success, including:
    • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
    • Short- and long-term disability and life insurance.
    • Employee assistance program.
    • Paid time away, parental leave, and holidays.
    • Retirement savings plan with employer match.
    • Employee referral bonus and tuition reimbursement.
  • Eight Employee Network Groups (Asian Pacific, Black, Hispanic/Latino(a), LGBTQ+, People with Disabilities, Veterans, Women, Young Professionals) to foster inclusion and belonging.

Pay

The expected compensation range for this position is $150,000–$200,000, depending on skills, experience, education, and geographical location.
