About the role
The Transport Unit provides secure transportation to authorized locations for the adults in the custody of the Department of Corrections. This position is part of the Transport Unit structure and manages the operational concerns of mass transfers, medical and court trips, and high security inmate movement consistent with prison and public safety.
Responsibilities
- Enforce sound safety and security principles, report any discrepancies to a supervisor.
- Conduct searches of the adults in custody and vehicles prior to transport.
- Use mechanical restraints as required to maintain control of the adults in custody being transported.
- Maintain key control adhering to department rules when dealing with restraint keys, vehicle keys, and other keys necessary in completing assigned duties.
- Process paperwork in accordance with department rules and policies.
- Drive and supervise drivers of a variety of vehicles, up to and including large transport buses.
- Carry and supervise security staff authorized to carry firearms during the performance of daily duties.
- Maintain a professional demeanor with the public while ensuring sound security practices are maintained.
- Work in a community setting under security supervision.
- Transport adults in custody from one facility to another, dental, and medical appointments, court appearances and travel throughout the continental United States.
- Interact with the public daily and be professional and courteous always while promoting public safety through ensuring sound security practices, maintaining positive control of adults in custody, and providing good customer service to all stakeholders.
Requirements
- Two (2) years of experience in a correctional security setting where your primary duties were the care and custody of adults in custody.
- Able to obtain, within two weeks, an Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Correctional Certificate OR a Correctional Certificate from another government agency.
- Valid Oregon motor vehicle operator's license.
- Willingness to work overtime as needed, sometimes with minimal notice.
