About the role
Provide safe, secure, and professional transportation of patients to and from hospitals, medical offices, dialysis centers, and private residences.
Responsibilities
- Provide a high level of customer service while transporting residents to and from activities, appointments, and other outings.
- Assist residents with boarding and leaving the bus, seat belts, securing wheelchairs and walkers, and handling groceries and packages.
- Ensure resident safety at all times, including during boarding, departing, and while in transit.
- Maintain vehicle upkeep: fueling, conducting preventative maintenance (oil level, tire pressure), and delivering the vehicle to authorized service facilities.
- Complete daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections, maintain vehicle cleanliness, and follow all facility requirements for vehicle maintenance and paperwork.
- Adhere to safety procedures and protocols as dictated by local policy, federal and state regulations, and standard practice. Report hazardous conditions, defective equipment, and accidents immediately.
- Follow infection control procedures, including hand washing and wearing protective clothing/equipment when required.
- Communicate effectively with the facility regarding schedule progress and additional instructions.
- Operate GPS, two-way radio, and/or cell phone for effective navigation.
- Maintain accurate activity and vehicle report logs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Active Illinois Driver’s License with the appropriate class and endorsements based on vehicle size:
- Class C license with a passenger endorsement for vehicles transporting 15 or more passengers.
- Class E license for vehicles transporting 14 or fewer passengers.
- Must be at least 25 years old and no older than 74 years (per insurance requirements).
- DOT-compliant physical required. Annual physician’s statement required for drivers aged 71–74 operating vehicles transporting 15 or more passengers.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- CNA license required.
- Experience as a bus or van driver preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with residents and facility staff.
- Writing and computer skills required for completing reports and scheduling.
Schedule
Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM.
Physical Demands
- Ability to move intermittently throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs to a minimum height of 5 feet and push, pull, move, or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
- Ability to push or pull up to 275 pounds a minimum distance of 50 feet.
- May be required to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergencies.
- Exposure to moderate noise levels and outdoor weather conditions.
- May be subject to emotionally upset residents or family members.
