About the role

The Department of State's Attorneys and Sheriffs is seeking to hire an SAS Transport Deputy to work in the Addison County Sheriff's Department in Middlebury, VT. This role involves the safe and secure transportation of prisoners, justice-involved persons, and court-involved juveniles to and from court, court-related hearings, or other facilities as ordered by the court. SAS Transport Deputies may also perform extradition work and other duties as permitted by policy or directed by the SAS Executive Director.

The SAS Transport Deputy is managed by the county Sheriff for law enforcement purposes and may assist other Sheriffs' offices with court-ordered transports or statewide transport needs. If no transports or related duties are scheduled, the Transport Deputy may assist the Sheriff with general law enforcement services within the county, in accordance with SAS Department Policy.

The position serves a six-month, full-time working test period (probationary period) that does not include time spent at the Vermont Police Academy for initial certification or any unpaid leave.

Schedule

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, normally scheduled Monday through Friday. However, starting and finishing times, as well as specific workdays, are directed by the Sheriff to meet transport, extradition, or other authorized assignment needs.

Pay

The position is a paygrade 23 with a salary range of $27.50 to $42.94 hourly and is eligible for State benefits.

Responsibilities

• Safely and securely transport prisoners, justice-involved persons, and court-involved juveniles to and from court, hearings, or other facilities as ordered.
• Perform extradition work and other duties as assigned by the SAS Executive Director or hosting Sheriff.
• Assist other Sheriffs' offices with court-ordered transports or statewide transport needs when requested.
• Adapt to variations in daily schedule and manage stress associated with transporting individuals experiencing anxiety related to court proceedings.
• Establish positive and collaborative working relationships with Sheriffs' offices, State's Attorneys, the Vermont Judiciary, Departments of Corrections, Mental Health, Children and Families, Vermont State Police, and other law enforcement and community partners.
• Follow all policies, rules, and protocols of the State, SAS Department, and hosting Sheriff, including the SAS Transport Policy.
• Complete and submit accurate timesheets, report all hours and leave time, and log transportation data into provided systems.
• Account for all work performed during State-paid hours.
• Assist with general law enforcement services within the county if no transports are scheduled, in accordance with SAS Department Policy.

Requirements

• Possess and maintain a valid Vermont Driver's license; failure to do so will result in separation from the position.
• Immediately report any criminal charges and motor vehicle violations to the Sheriff and the SAS Executive Director.
• Have a plan to achieve at least a Level 2 law enforcement certification from the Vermont Police Academy, in coordination with the hosting Sheriff's Department. Both Level 2 and Level 3 certifications are permissible, but failure to attain or maintain required certification may result in separation.
• Successfully complete a six-month, full-time working test period (probationary period) that excludes time spent at the Vermont Police Academy or on unpaid leave.

• Working knowledge of Vermont laws and ability to apply them correctly to Transport Deputy tasks.

• Work hours and daily schedule dependent on transport needs and court schedules, with potential delays.
• Stress related to transporting inmates, including potential physical altercations, medical emergencies, or individuals in mental health crisis.
• Ability to drive, sit, or stand for long periods.
• May be required to respond to call-ins for unexpected transports or extradition issues.
