Transmission Specialist II - Transmission & Substation Services - Morristown Gen. Office

About The Opportunity

This position provides field technical services and support for the maintenance, construction, testing, and commissioning of substation equipment up to 100 kV, and supports these activities up to and including equipment at 500 kV. Equipment includes power transformers, circuit breakers, CCVT's, mobile substations, capacitor banks, associated relay protection and control equipment, and SCADA systems. Maintenance and commissioning activities may involve new installations or modifications to existing substations.

This role requires significant time (90% or more) working outside of an office environment at various company and customer substation facilities and service centers in the employee’s local reporting area. Occasional technical support may be required for regional substation activities, including those in other operating companies.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a safe workplace for coworkers and the community by understanding potential hazards, industry regulations, and company practices.
• Commission new substation equipment and modifications to existing equipment up to 100 kV prior to release to system operations.
• Support commissioning of new substation equipment and modifications to existing equipment up to 500 kV with oversight from supervision and other commissioning engineers.
• Develop check-out guides, review and approve test results and isolation plans, and create energization plans to minimize system risk.
• Provide limited field design services to correct minor design problems encountered during substation capital projects.
• Offer onsite technical support to regional substation services employees during preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
• Apply engineering skills and operational knowledge to identify and resolve technical problems in the field during installation, testing, and the design life of substation equipment, including challenging and validating design approaches.
• Assist in developing or modifying maintenance practices to address changing technology, new equipment types, improved test methods, and regulatory changes.
• Audit preventive and corrective maintenance paperwork and test results to verify technical adequacy and regulatory completeness.
• Provide emergency technical support following substation equipment failures to aid customer restoration and system reinforcement, including developing field modifications and commissioning mobile substations.
• Support the emergency plan through participation in assigned storm duties, including hazard response and dispatching.
• Work both independently and collaboratively with regional and plant personnel, other departments, and outside vendors.
• Communicate across multi-disciplined teams, including electrical contractors, customers, FirstEnergy regional switchmen/technicians, system operations, design engineering, planning/protection, and project management to ensure successful and timely project completion.
• Assist in performing Apparent Cause and Root Cause analyses, documenting findings through technical reports and presentations.
• Educate others on technical subject matters and improve technical programs and process effectiveness.
• Support the development of corporate programs and policies and assist in leading organizational change.
• Assist senior technical staff in developing solutions to complex technical assignments.
• Support FE Utilities Operations and Maintenance staff in reaching goals and meeting deadlines.
• Produce results that positively impact the company and consistently anticipate customer needs to deliver high-quality outcomes.
• Travel throughout the FirstEnergy system, including occasional overnight stays when necessary.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology is preferred; in lieu of this, a Bachelor’s degree in a closely related technical field from an ABET-accredited institution is required.
• In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, an Associate Degree in a related technical field with 3 years of relevant work experience is required.
• In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 5 years of related substation experience is required.
• Strong consideration will be given to candidates with experience in the design, maintenance, or testing of substation equipment, as well as familiarity with microprocessor-based protection and control equipment.
• Experience with SEL products and software, Enoserve RTS, and Doble testing is a plus.

Pay

The estimated pay range for this role is $89,250 - $142,560, depending on location, skills, qualifications, and experience.
