Transmission Project Manager (Albuquerque)

About the role

Burns & McDonnell, a 100 % employee‑owned engineering, architectural, construction, environmental, permitting, and consulting firm founded in 1898, is seeking a Project Manager for its Transmission & Distribution global practice in Albuquerque. The role will manage overhead transmission and distribution projects, own profit and loss for individual projects, ensure successful completion within schedule, and build and maintain professional relationships with owners, subcontractors, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders. The position also emphasizes business and client development, including leveraging existing relationships, pursuing new clients, and supporting marketing activities.

Responsibilities

• Provide overall management of projects from concept to completion, including siting, environmental, permitting, planning, estimating, engineering, right‑of‑way acquisition, project controls, bid‑phase services, procurement, constructability reviews, material management, construction management, and closeout.
• Leverage existing client relationships, create new client relationships, and focus on repeat work within each account.
• Prepare proposals, assist in presentations, and participate in contract negotiations.
• Develop and monitor project schedules, manage scope, and control project costs.
• Own internal project financials (detailed, accurate cost forecasts and accruals), staffing, legal coordination, risk management, change management, and human‑resource issues.
• Serve as the primary point of contact with the client for coordination, strategic planning, master scope management, budget finances, subcontracting, project staffing, environmental compliance, facility support, and schedule attainment.
• Manage all aspects of project communication.
• Develop and implement project policies and procedures, establish project controls systems, and execute the project execution plan.
• Work closely with the project team to ensure deliverables meet client satisfaction and adhere to internal QA/QC guidelines.
• Report regularly on progress, cost, schedule metrics, procurement issues, safety or environmental concerns, design questions, potential impacts, and any issues requiring office support.
• Travel to clients and project locations as required.
• Support team development by assisting with hiring, training, and mentoring.
• Direct and coordinate activities of several disciplines on a project of moderate scope or a combination of smaller projects.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.
• At least 7 years of related experience, including 3 + years managing engineering projects in the Transmission & Distribution industry (a master’s degree may substitute for one year of experience).
• Professional Engineering (PE) registration preferred.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; ability to present complex information to all levels.
• Experience with production of transmission design and construction documents; distribution engineering experience is a plus.
• Knowledge and experience with the NESC code and other industry codes and standards (highly preferred).
• Ability to devise new approaches to problems encountered.
• Demonstrated success in project management, including proposal development, contract negotiations, project planning, design‑team coordination & communication, budgeting, schedule management, and client coordination.
• Proven ability to develop business and establish relationships with clients.
• Ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of industry, government, and public contracts on project‑related matters (preferred).
• Ability to travel as required.

Schedule

Full‑time. Travel required (~25 % of the time).
