Transmission Engineer - Transmission & Distribution (Minneapolis, Duluth)
About the role
The Transmission Engineer will work on project teams to create world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments involving underground and overhead high-voltage transmission lines. The role involves collaborating with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting transmission plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.
Responsibilities
- Perform transmission design from the conceptual phase through design completion.
- Modify and review transmission components to meet project needs and requirements set by project managers.
- Prepare transmission equipment, including packaged equipment specifications, data sheets, Request for Qualifications (RFQs), technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.
- Conduct economic conductor selection studies, lightning performance, and grounding calculations/studies.
- Compile calculations for required electrical clearances based on NESC or other applicable codes.
- Prepare communications interpreting and applying NERC, FERC, and regional requirements and standards.
- Apply strong knowledge of transmission engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures.
- Research and compile project-related data as required by project managers, including studies and reports.
- Write specifications and update drawings provided by senior engineers to verify corrections using multiple CAD-related software.
- Compile information for client presentations, shop drawing reviews, and contract administration for various facilities (e.g., power, process, pipeline, industrial, healthcare, airports, educational, commercial, governmental, and military).
- Perform field inspections, measurements, or calculations for public and private clients.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program.
- Alternatively, a Bachelor of Science in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program with successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering may substitute for 1 year of experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in transmission engineering; 5 years preferred.
- Prior consulting experience is strongly preferred.
- Successful completion (i.e., passing) of FE or EIT is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of standard civil/structural engineering techniques and procedures.
Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment with demonstrated critical thinking skills.
- Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite and PLS-CADD).
- Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
Pay
$95,000.00 - $150,000.00 yearly. The expected compensation range is based on individual education, qualifications, prior work experience, and work location. The total annual compensation package includes a base salary and eligibility to participate in a discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
