About the role

The Staff Transmission Engineer will work on project teams to create world-class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on a variety of overhead high voltage transmission line projects. They will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting transmission plans according to budget constraints, design factors or client needs. This role involves preparing specifications for construction, hardware, and material for high voltage overhead transmission lines (HV OH T-Line); structure design and development; hardware design and selection; and field installation supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and lead transmission design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
    • Includes PLS-CADD modeling, line routing, structure analysis to develop load trees, developing design criteria, sag-tension calculations, wire blowout, swing angle, damper recommendations, structure spotting, clearance reports, wire selection, etc.
  • Prepare specifications for construction, hardware, and material for high & extra high voltage overhead transmission lines.
  • Prepare construction drawings and cost estimates for high & extra high voltage overhead transmission lines.
  • Compile calculations for required electrical clearances based on NESC, GO 95 or other applicable codes and resources.
  • Prepare communications of the interpretation and application of necessary NERC, FERC and regional requirements and standards.
  • Possesses strong knowledge of commonly used transmission engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the transmission engineering services industry.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to less experienced staff members.
  • Develop into a leadership role leading teams of engineers and being a primary interface between Burns & McDonnell Engineers and our clients.
  • Experience as the technical lead on projects and performing quality reviews is a plus.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program and 3 years of transmission engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and 3 years of transmission engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Master's degree in civil engineering and 2 years of transmission engineering experience, consulting preferred.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of standard civil/structural engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Proficient knowledge and proficiency in utilizing Design software and tools including but not limited to Bentley Power Line system based programs (i.e., PLS-CADD, PLS-TOWER, PLS-POLE, PLS-LITE), SAG 10, L-PILE, or AUTO CAD.
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards, including NESC, GO95 ASCE 74, ASCE 48-11, or ASCE 10-97.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrate critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability/experience performing quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications is a plus.
