Transmission Compression Engineer

About the role

The Transmission Compression Engineer supports 24/7 365 television transmission facilities, responsible for the setup, configuration, and testing of new transport systems, as well as the maintenance of existing systems. They also provide documentation of signal flow and procedures to support workflow, participate in 24/7 shift coverage, interface with engineering groups, and handle shift coverage for the Compression facility.

Responsibilities

• Provide shift coverage for the Compression facility and be the Tier 1 support for all compression-related issues and incidents.
• Participate in the planning, installation, and integration of new or replacement equipment and systems.
• Ensure outgoing and incoming signals and content are of the highest quality by applying best business practices.
• Quality control of installations, equipment, and documentation utilized by the terminal gear rooms.
• Provide high-quality customer service to primary customers including Teleport operations, Distribution technology, CNN satellites/SNG, TEN, and the TBS networks.

Requirements

• 5 to 8 years of Compression Engineering experience or equivalent.
• A 4-year Technical Degree or 2-year technical degree with equivalent experience.
• Understanding of networking/routing protocols (UDP, unicast, multicast).
• Understanding of Video standards related to transport (SD/HDSDI, ASI, IP and other compression formats).
• Mpeg encoding systems proficiency.
• Cisco, Arris, and Harmonic familiarity.
• AutoCAD and Visio proficiency.
• Desirable skills include Studio, Network Operations, and Digital Television distribution IT data certifications, Cable TV and IPTV experience, Remote Monitoring and Control System experience (SNMP based), Good working knowledge of MPEG-2, MPEG-4, J2K, multiplexes, and conditional access.
