This role sits within the Division of Family, Community and Student Empowerment, which oversees a diverse portfolio of offices—including Family and Community Engagement, Students in Temporary Housing and Foster Care, Community Schools and Strategic Partnerships, Attendance Research and Innovations, the Office of School Wellness Programs, and the Office of Language Access. Together, these teams support the Chancellor in serving New York City’s approximately 1 million students, ensuring parents, students, and communities have enhanced opportunities for support with a focus on family empowerment, community engagement, wellness, and language access. The Office of Language Access (OLA) is seeking an Urdu translator to handle translation, editing, and proofreading of documents for Limited-English-Proficient (LEP) parents and communities. While the primary focus is written translation, the role may also involve interpreting as a secondary function.
Responsibilities
- Translate NYCPS documents for distribution to LEP parents and communities.
- Use translation tools, word processing, desktop publishing, and workflow management software to streamline the translation process.
- Review and edit translated materials from vendors or other NYCPS staff for accuracy, grammar, style, and consistency.
- Represent NYCPS in matters related to the culture and language of the translator.
- Provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretation at scheduled events, occasionally using interpreting equipment.
- Perform over-the-phone interpreting or sight translations as needed.
- Collaborate with language team members to create standardized terminology and style guides.
Requirements
- Proficiency to interpret and translate between Urdu and English with clarity and accuracy in a professional setting.
- One of the following:
- A four-year high school diploma or equivalent and two years of full-time professional experience performing oral interpreting and written translating between Urdu and English; or
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in Urdu; or
- A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to the above, provided all candidates hold a four-year high school diploma and the ability to interpret and translate between Urdu and English.
- Two additional years of the experience described in the first qualification option.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with the NYCPS system.
- Ability to meet aggressive deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 applications.
- Knowledge of SDL Trados.
- Experience with virtual platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
- Ability to type in Urdu using a computer.
Pay
$61,632 – $67,785 (Internal candidates selected for this position who currently hold comparable or less senior roles within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
