About the Role

Operates a tractor hauling various types of trailers, including Walking Floors, End Dump, Flatbed, and Lowboys. The role involves transporting solid waste or recycling materials from transfer stations to facilities such as landfills, Material Recovery Facilities (MRF), mills, or special handling facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Safely drive truck on route in accordance with Smith System Driving principles.
  • Secure containers by attaching hooks, using control levers to load containers onto the truck bed, securing straps, and hand-tarping containers as necessary.
  • Provide courteous and efficient customer service in all aspects of refuse operations.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude toward company, customer, and municipal goals.
  • Operate hydraulic and lift equipment on the vehicle.
  • Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections as set forth by Waste Pro procedures and D.O.T. guidelines, including safety lane activity and DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report).
  • Inspect under the hood, check undercarriage, fluid levels, and tire pressure; refuel as needed.
  • Maintain a clean truck, washing the exterior weekly.
  • Perform manual duties such as cleaning up scattered refuse and moving/emptying large trash bins using truck hydraulics.
  • Prepare, maintain, and submit required company and regulation-mandated reports and documents.
  • Supervise all personnel working on the vehicle during the designated route.
  • Comply with all Department of Transportation and state requirements for operators of commercial motor vehicles.

Requirements

  • Class A CDL valid for the state in which the position works.
  • Clean driving record.
  • At least 1 year of previous experience operating a vehicle requiring a CDL within the past 7 years.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age or older.
  • Understanding of refuse collection policies, procedures, guidelines, and practices.
  • Knowledge of Department of Transportation and state requirements for operators of commercial motor vehicles.
  • Ability to hear and see within normal ranges, with or without correction.
  • Exhibit normal range of body motion.
  • Ability to drive various refuse trucks (front-end, side, rear-end, or roll-off loading), including right-hand driver’s position on certain equipment, while observing legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Ability to manipulate heavy equipment control levers.
  • Follow designated refuse collection routes or work schedules.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain written records and service responses.
  • Speak and read English well enough to communicate with customers, co-workers, dispatch, and supervisors, understand highway and traffic signals, and make legible entries on paperwork.
