About the Role

Supervises and coordinates activities of train crew engaged in switching railroad cars within yards, industrial plants, or similar locations to facilitate loading, unloading, making up, and breaking up of trains in a safe and efficient manner. This position is employed by an affiliated company of Patriot Rail.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and coordinates the activities of train crews.
• Receives oral or written instructions from Manager or Customer indicating which cars are to be switched.
• Notifies Conductor of switching orders, specifying which cars are to be moved to designated yard locations, using radio, telephone, verbal, or hand signals.
• Provides instructions for throwing track switches and coupling/uncoupling cars.
• Manages cars online through various RMI reports.
• Ensures daily train lists are accurate as generated by the customer service department and completed by train crews within the assigned territory.
• Ensures all reporting is accurate and timely, including daily crew work sheets and weekly operational reporting.
• Downloads and effectively reads a locomotive event recorder.
• Understands car hire and demurrage processes.
• Approves all man-hours under area of responsibility and forwards them to necessary personnel or departments on a timely basis.
• Initiates and provides accurate, complete, and timely investigations of all accidents and incidents, including causes, remedial actions, and recommended solutions.
• Understands quantitative factors contributing to major railroad costs and their impact on financial performance.
• Monitors all outstanding track conditions within the territory, including slow orders, and assesses their effect on productivity and efficiency.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of three years prior experience in trainmen functions.
• Must hold, and continue to hold, a current locomotive engineer’s and conductor’s certification.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply basic federal railroad regulations, guidelines, and rules.
• Ability to read and comprehend written safety rules, procedures, safety manuals, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos, and other work-related information.
• Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
• Ability to apply principles of logic to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems.
• Ability to effectively communicate instructions, directions, processes, procedures, safety rules, and regulations to co-workers, supervisors, and others in written, oral, diagrammatic, and schedule form.
• Ability to train switch crews and other yard personnel on job-related duties, federal and company regulations, rules, safety guidelines, and preventive maintenance.
• Ability to make independent judgments using sound reasoning skills and knowledge base.
• Ability to think and act quickly in responding to emergency and non-emergency situations.
• Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, courteously, and professionally with co-workers, yard personnel, switching crew, engineers, railroad officials, and others.
• Ability to pass training and required testing.
• Valid Driver’s License.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, handle objects, reach with hands and arms, write, talk, type, and hear.
• Occasionally required to stoop, bend, kneel, and lift/move up to 80 lbs.
• Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.

Travel

50%–75% anticipated travel.
