Trainee Train Driver - Sheffield

Full-time role based in Sheffield with a rolling 35-hour weekly shift pattern including evenings, nights, and weekends (e.g., 03:00–10:30, 07:00–16:30, 15:30–00:30, 18:00–02:30). Recruitment for training courses will continue throughout 2027.

About the role

As a Trainee Train Driver, you will join a 2-year apprenticeship programme beginning with a 5-month intensive classroom-based learning phase. During this period, no annual leave is permitted. Following classroom training, you will complete at least 230 driving hours under the supervision of a Driver Mentor. Competence will be continuously evaluated, culminating in a final assessment lasting up to two weeks. Training centres are located in Leeds and Manchester; accommodation will be provided if you live over 1.5 hours away.

The role is safety-critical and subject to Rail Safety Standards Board (RSSB) regulations. You will be required to work bank holidays and adhere to a set leave allocation.

Responsibilities

• Operate trains professionally, ensuring adherence to schedules while maintaining safe operations.
• Strictly follow safety protocols, including signalling systems, speed limits, and track conditions.
• Respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies or unexpected situations.
• Undergo regular training and competency assessments to stay updated on safety procedures and regulations.
• Conduct safety inspections of trains before driving and report any defects to maintenance staff.
• Secure the train after completing your journey and promptly report any faults encountered during service.
• Maintain accurate records of activities, including departure and arrival times, incidents, delays, and other relevant information.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with control centres, signal operators, and other personnel.
• Adapt to changes in routes, weather conditions, or unexpected circumstances while maintaining operational efficiency.
• Manage your lifestyle to ensure adequate rest before shifts, acknowledging the demanding nature of the role.

Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must meet the following criteria:

• Currently live within a 45-minute car journey from the station you will work from.
• Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
• Pass the TDLCR Train Driver medical assessment, including drugs and alcohol screening.
• Not have defective colour vision.
• Obtain a pass to an enhanced level on the Train Driver Psychometric Assessments (valid for 5 years; maximum of three attempts).
• Commit to working early, late, and weekend shifts without relying on public transport.

Pay

• £29,029 per annum during the 12-month training period.
• £50,161 in Year 1 after training.
• £55,348 in Year 2.
• £67,104 in Year 3.
