Train Service Personnel II - CAS/PT (Less than 19 hours/week)

About the role

The Train Service Personnel II works as a conductor and fireman for the Grapevine Vintage Railroad (GVRR) in a safe and efficient manner. They provide a clean, safe, and pleasant experience for employees and passengers, and promote GVRR as a premier excursion railroad.

Responsibilities

• Operates on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad as a fireman and conductor.
• Maintains proper water level and steam pressure as a locomotive fireman.
• Communicates with dispatchers, coordinates switching moves, and works with the engineer to safely move the train.
• Ensures on-time departures and arrivals, and maintains a safe and pleasant experience for fellow employees and passengers.
• Ensures equipment, facilities, and grounds are secure, clean, and well-maintained.
• Makes daily inspections of equipment in use, performs preventive maintenance inspections, diagnoses malfunctions, services, and repairs locomotive and train systems.
• Completes required reporting, record keeping, and FRA log reports and forms in a timely, accurate, and organized manner.
• Maintains current rule book and special instructions.
• Aids in needed repairs and scheduled maintenance of all equipment, and participates in Roundhouse operations.
• Assists in volunteer programs to promote the Grapevine Vintage Railroad.
• Performs related duties as directed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Successfully passed the GCOR rules test with a score of at least 85.
• Verifiable experience as a "service covered" Railroad Conductor or Fireman, or experience as a "service covered" TSP I with the City of Grapevine.
• Proficiency in current Federal Railroad Administration Code of Federal Regulations, Standard Book of Rules (GCOR), state and local laws and regulations.
• Minimum of 1-year experience in the installation, inspection, and/or repairing of electrical systems to include 70v, 110v, 220v, and 480v systems.
• Minimum of 1-year experience in the installation, inspection, and/or repairing of HVAC systems.

Qualifications

• Ability to identify abnormal readings or trends in data collected from gauges, meters, dials, instruments, etc.
• Ability to follow oral and written directions.
• Ability to diagnose defective operations and excessive wear on mechanical equipment parts and components.
• Ability to diagnose and repair railroad equipment.
• Ability to determine functional interrelationship of parts within a mechanical system.
• Ability to interpret technical reference manuals.

Skills

• Knowledge of federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations applicable to locomotive and equipment standards.
• Knowledge of the safety standards for passenger trains and related equipment.
• Knowledge of federal railroad inspection standards.
• Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in servicing and repairing steam, gasoline and diesel equipment.
• Knowledge of vehicle and equipment mechanics, including internal combustion engines and hydraulic and electrical systems.
• Ability to operate a variety of equipment used in railroads maintenance and repair functions and operations, including but not limited to forklifts, steam and diesel locomotives, passenger coaches, railroad switches, turn tables, two-way radio, and hand and power tools.
• Proficiency in office procedures.
• Skill in operating computers and communicating verbally and in writing.
