Traffic Engineer
Position Overview
This exempt position leads the planning, design, and delivery of complex traffic engineering, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) projects that improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the region's transportation network. As a Professional Engineer within the RTC's Engineering Department, you will manage high-impact transportation projects from concept through construction, oversee consultant and contractor performance, and collaborate with regional partners to implement innovative traffic operations and technology solutions. This role offers the opportunity to help shape the future of mobility through the continued implementation of RTC's ITS Strategic Master Plan, including the advancement of a regional Traffic Management Center and integrated corridor operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage complex traffic engineering, ITS, and TSMO projects from planning and design through construction and implementation.
- Support implementation of RTC's ITS Strategic Master Plan, including regional Traffic Management Center initiatives and integrated corridor operations.
- Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, procurement documents, and consultant agreements while managing consultant and contractor performance.
- Review and approve engineering plans, traffic studies, specifications, and technical reports to ensure quality, compliance, and sound engineering practices.
- Evaluate traffic impacts, analyze transportation data, and develop engineering solutions that improve safety, mobility, and operational performance.
- Collaborate with local jurisdictions, NDOT, consultants, utility providers, and community stakeholders to advance regional transportation initiatives.
- Provide technical recommendations to agency leadership regarding transportation improvements, operational strategies, and emerging technologies.
- Ensure compliance with RTC policies, engineering standards, OSHA requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience, including two (2) years as a licensed Professional Engineer.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
- Current Professional Engineer (PE) registration or the ability to obtain a Nevada PE license within six (6) months of hire.
- Valid driver's license at the time of hire.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential duties.
Preferred Qualification
- Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
