About the role
The Traffic Control Supervisor II is a mid-level field leadership role responsible for overseeing traffic control crews, coordinating complex work zone operations, and ensuring full compliance with the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual (VWAPM), project specifications, and all company safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Oversee traffic control crews and ensure all work zones are set up, monitored, and removed according to VWAPM and project-specific requirements.
- Conduct daily field audits, verify compliance, and execute corrective actions when necessary.
- Perform both stationary and mobile lane closures on limited-access highways, ensuring proper setup, monitoring, and breakdown of traffic control devices in accordance with state and federal safety standards.
- Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for contractors, inspectors, and company leadership for assigned projects.
- Review and interpret complex traffic control plans; ensure crews execute layouts accurately and efficiently.
- Cook up daily job readiness, staffing, and equipment deployment.
- Adjust work zone setups in real time to respond to emergency conditions, project changes, or safety concerns.
- Provide hands-on training to new employees, Flaggers, Traffic Control Assistants, and Supervisor I personnel.
- Model and enforce high standards of safety, productivity, and professionalism.
- Participate in onboarding, skills assessments, and development of junior supervisors.
- Maintain accurate logs for job activities, crew attendance, safety observations, and incident reports.
- Ensure vehicles, equipment, and materials assigned to crews are properly maintained, stocked, and inspected.
- Communicate daily operational updates to the Traffic Operations Manager or department head.
- Champion a safety-first culture across all crews and sites.
- Conduct hazard assessments and lead tailgate meetings when supervising multiple crews.
- Respond to and help manage any field incidents or near-misses in accordance with company protocols.
Requirements
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License
- Must be able to work night shifts as required
- Minimum 3–5 years of traffic control or construction field experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role
- Strong, demonstrated knowledge of VWAPM traffic control principles
- Experience managing crews and complex work zone setups
- Ability to read, interpret, and implement traffic control plans independently
- Experience driving larger trucks (18'–24'), non-CDL
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs and perform physically demanding outdoor work
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and travel across regional job sites
- Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screen
- Availability for nights, weekends, and emergency response deployments
- Experience working stationary and mobile lane closures on limited access highways
Preferred
- ATSSA Intermediate Certification
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- Prior experience supervising multiple crews or high-profile/high-traffic projects
- Strong administrative, reporting, and technology skills
