Trades Technician I - Temporary

Temporary position up to 29 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

About the role

Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. This temporary position helps maintain the college’s landscaped grounds through mowing, weed eating, and general grounds maintenance services that preserve the beauty, safety, and functionality of the campus, ensuring an inviting environment that supports the college’s educational mission and leaves a positive impression on students, employees, and visitors.

Responsibilities

• Maintain landscaped grounds through mowing, weed eating, and general grounds maintenance.
• Operate power equipment including lawn mowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and other landscaping equipment.
• Apply proper methods of caring for trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns.
• Manage time across all duties assigned for the day.
• Follow directions and work independently or as a member of a team.
• Use hand tools required for landscaping.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Assist the agency or state government in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Requirements

• Basic understanding of groundskeeping and landscaping practices and procedures.
• Ability and desire to learn groundskeeping and landscaping practices and procedures.
• Ability to work efficiently and thoroughly.
• Operation of a state vehicle required (campus travel only).

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous experience in a similar position preferred.

Pay

$12.77 per hour
