About the role
The overall function of this position is to diagnose, repair, and maintain motor vehicles to ensure safety through accurate preventative maintenance, repairing, and overhauling a variety of automobiles, trucks, tractors, road sweepers, aerial bucket trucks, and similar equipment.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose, overhaul, and repair all vehicle systems, including electrical, computer, electronic, brake, fuel injection, A/C cooling, and heating.
- Perform final tune-ups.
- Stick fuel tanks and oil drums for inventory purposes.
- Locate and trace hard-to-find defects and causes of malfunctions using listening, visual inspections, and a wide range of test equipment (e.g., engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, vacuum testers, ignition timers, dwell meters, test stands, oscilloscopes, compression gauges, special feeder and dial gauges).
- Determine the nature and extent of repairs necessary and select the best work procedures to accomplish repairs with minimal supervision.
- Hook up fuel, hydraulic, oil, and electrical systems and make adjustments to ensure proper operation.
- Gather technical manuals (in book or computerized form) to perform jobs efficiently.
- Enforce all safety procedures.
- Tear down and rebuild components and assemblies (e.g., fitting and installing pistons, rings, bearings, gears).
- Rebuild front ends.
- Align, mesh, and connect repaired units to related mechanisms (e.g., engine and clutch, transmission mechanism).
Requirements
- No prior experience or training is required.
- A valid Louisiana Class “D” Chauffeur’s license is required.
Pay
- Trades Apprentice: $16.06 hourly
- Mechanic 1: $17.18 hourly
- Mechanic 2: $19.67 hourly
- Mechanic 3: $21.05 hourly (maximum monthly salary: $6,566)
