Pay

The base salary range for this position is $87,600 – $109,500, dependent upon experience and location.

Schedule

This role works on a 12-hour rotating shift basis, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

About the role

The Real Time Energy Trader performs real-time energy trading and marketing as part of a three-person team. Responsibilities include negotiating wholesale sales and purchases in hourly markets, coordinating generation operations with dispatch personnel, managing transmission reservations, and scheduling energy flow by issuing digital E-tags. Traders record deals, maintain a physical position through trading software, and communicate with forecasting and reliability dispatch while maintaining awareness of the company’s generation assets. The role involves developing professional relationships with power marketers and traders.

Responsibilities

  • Negotiate transactions to financially optimize corporate assets, including renewable and thermal generation.
  • Capture market arbitrage opportunities by utilizing transmission to link markets across the United States.
  • Manage real-time arbitrage opportunities and day-ahead/real-time transactions.
  • Provide market pricing for day-ahead to real-time transactions.
  • Create NERC E-tags, purchase transmission via OASIS, and accurately record transactions in Avangrid's energy management system.
  • Facilitate training of other real-time traders.
  • Provide generation and transmission schedules to ISOs, control areas, and transmission providers.
  • Manage unit bids/offers in Northeastern and Midwestern ISOs to optimize the portfolio.
  • Manage asset and proprietary risk through day-ahead transactions.
  • Trade physical power across the eastern U.S. to maximize profitability.
  • Purchase transmission as needed to execute physical trades.
  • Schedule and tag physical transactions.
  • Trade intra-day financial power OTC in Northeastern and Midwestern ISOs.
  • Provide insight into short-term market operations to other traders.
  • Offer insights into additional market areas as the portfolio expands.
  • Represent Avangrid Renewables professionally with a diverse group of customers and market participants.
  • Interact with plant personnel, traders, and system operators.
  • Adhere to effective internal business and industry controls.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in mathematics, business, finance, economics, or engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Solid understanding of generation and transmission operations.
  • Quick learning curve with the ability to process and transact on information efficiently.
  • Ability to self-motivate and create opportunities.
  • Experience with markets such as WECC, CAISO, Southwest, ERCOT, MISO, PJM, or NYISO, with proven ability to understand market conditions and identify sales/purchase opportunities.
  • PC proficiency and experience with automated tools to support trading activity.
  • Understanding of financial modeling, risk assessment, commodity management, electricity and natural gas trading, and hedging practices.
  • Ability to function independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Performance-driven, self-motivated, and proactive with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong Excel experience.
  • Familiarity with LIM or other price data warehouses.
  • Ability to create NERC tags without templates.
  • Familiarity with virtual transactions.
  • Ability to model intra-day and next-day pricing and load to devise strategies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with MISO, ERCOT, IMO, and HQ markets.
  • Experience trading at different points within California.
  • Strong knowledge of the California ISO.
  • Experience managing physical assets within the WSCC.
  • Ability to navigate and succeed in a highly matrixed reporting structure, preferably at an international company.
  • Demonstrated performance leading initiatives and building consensus at all levels of a matrixed global organization.
  • Ability to work effectively in environments requiring consensus between diverse work streams.
  • Maintains effectiveness during procedural or organizational changes and when dealing with varying personality styles and tasks.
  • Effectively provides and receives information orally in individual and group situations.
  • Clear, concise written communication that conveys the desired message.
