About the Center

Tougaloo College, in collaboration with The Episcopal Church, is developing a Center for Racial Justice and Equity inspired by world-class sites. The Center will combine academic research with community engagement to draw students and mature scholars together, aiming to effect substantive change toward a more just society. It will engage scholars from diverse contexts, including current Tougaloo students, exchange students from around the world, and seasoned learners.

The project highlights and strengthens Tougaloo’s longstanding role as a convener of thought leaders in social justice and racial equity. Leveraging strong existing networks with other colleges and universities, including HBCUs, the Center will have local, national, and global impact. It will also address justice-related needs in the Center’s geographic location, putting theory into practice through impactful community engagement.

The history and foundations of Tougaloo—both the place and the institution—have forged a unique set of values rooted in the history of inequity and a conviction for remedy through education and service.
