Part-time evening position supporting the Diesel Power Technology department by organizing, maintaining, and repairing shop equipment, tools, and supplies.

About the role

The Toolroom Assistant provides support and assistance to faculty, students, and division deans by managing tool room operations, performing routine equipment maintenance, monitoring inventory, and maintaining a clean and organized lab space. The role involves assisting students with tool check-out, troubleshooting broken equipment, and handling other assigned tasks during periods of low student activity.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain tool room organization and inventory.
  • Keep tool room and shop orderly and free of unsafe conditions.
  • Monitor tool check-out procedure and follow up with students regarding missing or broken tools.
  • Perform minor equipment maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Work successfully and productively in a team environment with full-time and adjunct faculty.
  • Assist faculty, staff, or students on proper usage or handling of equipment.
  • Move, position, store, and carry oversized equipment or tools to service vehicles or classrooms for demonstration.
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with a diverse college staff and student population.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid, current Class-D driver’s license.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Two years’ mechanical work experience or training in a shop or related environment.
  • Ability to identify and maintain shop tools.

Skills

  • Ability to identify and correctly name hand and power tools commonly used in the industry, including their proper, technical, and common names, as well as their appropriate uses.
  • Ability to learn new tools/equipment and their uses as they become available.
  • Problem-solving strategies for troubleshooting broken shop equipment and tools.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic maintenance and repair skills for shop tools and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and use of computers in a business environment.
  • Strong commitment to customer service across a broad range of stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Forklift operation certified.

Physical Demands

  • Moderate physical activity primarily indoors, with occasional lifting of 50 pounds.
  • Carrying tools, equipment, manuals, and supplies.
  • Mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer.
  • Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen.
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone or during virtual meetings.
  • Sensitivity and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

Pay

$17.74 - $18.23 per hour

Schedule

  • Part-time, 11 hours per week.
  • 30 weeks per year (330 budgeted hours per year).
  • Temporary position.
