About the role

We are seeking a Tooling Technician to support the build, finishing, maintenance, and repair of production and prototype thermoforming tooling used in automotive soft-trim manufacturing. This role plays a critical part in ensuring tooling quality, production readiness, and continuous improvement within a fast-paced automotive environment. You’ll be part of a skilled tooling team supporting automotive programs from prototype through production. This role offers hands-on work, technical growth, and the opportunity to contribute directly to product quality and manufacturing success.

Responsibilities

  • Build, finish, and polish production and prototype thermoforming tooling and components using hand tools and powered equipment
  • Inspect tooling surfaces throughout the finishing process to ensure cosmetic and functional quality
  • Perform routine service, preventative maintenance, and repairs on vacuum forming and thermoforming tools
  • Absorb tooling changeovers and setups to support production schedules and minimize downtime
  • Troubleshoot tooling-related production issues and support continuous improvement efforts
  • Support tool tryouts, debugging, and adjustments during new program launches and engineering changes
  • Perform minor tooling modifications, surface refinishing, and repairs as needed
  • Maintain tooling organization, storage, and labeling to prevent damage and ensure traceability
  • Absorb general shop maintenance, housekeeping, and 5S activities
  • Follow all safety, quality, and work instruction requirements

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 3–5 years of experience in a tooling, manufacturing, or related industrial environment (benchwork, tool finishing, or polishing strongly preferred)
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship
  • Comfort performing repetitive, detailed manual tasks
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to take initiative
  • Background in Tool & Die, Maintenance, Carpentry, or similar skilled trades
  • Experience with thermoforming or vacuum forming tooling
  • Ability to read basic prints, tooling layouts, or work instructions
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Ability to reach, bend, push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Frequent use of small hand tools requiring fine motor skills
