Tool & Die Operator

About the role

Perform all jobs associated with tooling as directed and prepare, set up, and maintain tooling and parts required for changeovers. Establish records associated with tooling, sizing sleeves, barrels and screws, and changeovers. Maintain and control the quality of tooling as well as its shipment.

Responsibilities

• Clean, repair, and maintain die heads and die tooling.
• Clean and repair belling heads.
• Locate, repair, and store all tooling associated with PVC extrusion.
• Set up die racks and label all die parts.
• Inspect all die parts for chrome wear or damage; ship out for repair if necessary.
• Set up heater bands and pin heaters on equipment and check for proper operation.
• Prepare die set-ups for changeovers (air plugs, tank gaskets, chains) and assist with all changeovers.
• Keep records of all tooling sent out for repair or loaned to other locations.
• Measure barrels and screws, keep accurate records of barrels and screws measured, and send them out for rebuild as required.
• Perform preventive maintenance work on plant equipment as directed.
• Perform minor carpentry work around and in the plant (e.g., build storage shelves, crate parts and equipment for shipment).
• Perform routine cleaning and painting of plant equipment and facilities as required.
• Teach, advocate, and use safe working practices at all times and report hazardous conditions.
• Keep maintenance equipment and working areas clean at all times.
• Direct the activities of others when assigned; instruct and follow up the activities of inexperienced employees.
• Fill out records when required.
• Perform all other jobs associated with tooling as directed, and other assignments as directed by the Plant Manager.

Requirements

• One-year certificate from college or technical school and/or two to four years of related experience with die heads and die tooling, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, bore gauges) required.
• PVC extrusion tooling experience preferred.

Skills

• Able to use a tablet to receive, complete, and document work orders and tooling records.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write simple correspondence.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
• Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
• Ability to perform mathematical operations using units of American money, weight measurement, volume, and distance.
• Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
• Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical demands

• Regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
• Frequently required to walk, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear.
• Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or climb stairs, and to climb ladders and work at heights up to 50 feet.
• Must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment

Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment. Work involves frequent lifting of materials and product. Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to: eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and gloves. Loose-fitting clothes and jewelry are not permitted.
