About the Role
The Tool & Die Maker plays a key role in the operation and maintenance of high-speed manufacturing equipment producing aluminum cans at the Sugar Land, Texas location. This position reports directly to the Plant Engineer and works closely with the operations team to ensure equipment reliability and product quality.
Responsibilities
- Perform work requiring thorough knowledge of machine shop and tool room practices, material properties, and tooling principles.
- Repair or alter end and tongue dies, including manufacturing replacement parts as needed.
- Use precision measuring instruments to assemble, fit, align, and adjust parts to exact tolerances.
- Manage tooling inventories, set up tool packs, measure precision tolerances, and work with assembly set-ups.
- Study blueprints, sketches, or models to determine materials and machines needed for fabrication.
- Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and other equipment to machine parts.
- Collaborate with the operations team to troubleshoot, analyze production issues, and develop solutions.
- Run quality checks on products in line with customer requirements.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Five-to-ten years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Thorough knowledge of working with ferrous, non-ferrous, and non-metallic materials, cutting oils, grinding compounds, and other processing materials.
- Proven competency in the use of micrometers, calipers, and related precision measuring equipment.
- Ability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.
Qualifications
- Associate degree, vocational/technical certification, or journeyman’s card/license (preferred).
- High-speed packaging industry experience (preferred).
- Knowledge of Six Sigma, SPC, and Lean Manufacturing (preferred).
- Strong problem-solving skills, both independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints, electrical schematics, and parts specifications.
- High competency in using precision measuring tools and running precision equipment.
- Experience with equipment rebuilds and creative problem-solving.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Effective leadership skills, including conflict resolution, communication, and decision-making.
- Strong employee relations skills and ability to motivate others.
- Excellent time management, project management, and multitasking abilities.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient math and computer skills, with working knowledge of Microsoft programs (Excel, Word, Access, etc.).
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and may need to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- May lift and/or move up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to work up to twelve-hour shifts, both day and evening.
- Must provide own tools.
