About the role

The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) is hiring a Youth Organizer to work with our advocacy and organizing team to educate immigrant communities and strengthen a broad base of members around issues that impact them. This person will work to build power through community organizing. In addition, the youth organizer will educate community members on public transit and affordable housing efforts so they know how to take action and be part of policy development where it will benefit communities of color. • Create and implement an intentional leadership development program—including elements such as “the art of leadership,” meeting facilitation, resolving conflict, managing tasks and projects, time management, public speaking, etc.
  • Work as part of the organizing and campaigns teams to connect youth members with leadership opportunities, and ensure that they are involved at all stages of planning, implementing and evaluating campaigns.
  • Create and implement a program for youth organizing and advocacy, with an annual calendar, and key events.
  • Provide support for individual youth members statewide through deportation defense, crisis response, college counseling, and meeting with parents.
  • Recruit dues-paying individual members to join TIRRC to help build TIRRC’s power and empower community members across the state.
  • Maintain and grow the youth leadership pipeline statewide through 1-on-1 recruitment, individual leadership development, trainings using popular education methodology, internal and external growth opportunities, and weekly meetings where youth craft and evaluate strategy.

Qualifications

  • Belief in TIRRC’s mission and experience with social justice;
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds, and to build and maintain relationships with partners;
  • Demonstrated ability to work on deadline, be highly organized, and maintain accountability and strong communication with others in collaborative projects;
  • Demonstrated ability and comfort with public speaking;
  • Experience with community organizing and outreach strongly preferred;
  • Basic literacy with Google Suite, video conferencing platforms, and data management systems;
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including some nights, weekends, and travel statewide;
  • Fluency in English required and fluency or working proficiency in another language spoken by TIRRC’s constituencies preferred;
  • Must have reliable transportation.
