Core Responsibilities
- Check tire tread levels, wear patterns, valve quality, and overall health to determine if repair or replacement is needed.
- Mount and dismount tires using specialized machinery.
- Perform wheel balancing and alignment procedures to ensure a smooth, safe ride and prevent uneven tire wear.
- Patch punctures, plug leaks, and replace faulty valves.
- Move tires to different positions on the vehicle to maximize tire lifespan.
- Advise management on tire maintenance, wear issues, and recommend the best products for their vehicles and driving habits.
- Organize and maintain tire inventory, ensuring popular sizes and brands are stocked.
- Abide by strict safety protocols, maintain a clean workspace, and dispose of old tires according to environmental regulations.
Key Skills & Qualifications
- Mechanical Aptitude: Proficient in using hand tools, power tools, and automotive diagnostic machinery.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to frequently lift heavy objects (50+ lbs), bend, and stand for extended periods in a shop environment.
- Communication: Strong customer service skills and the ability to clearly explain mechanical issues to vehicle owners.
- Certifications: Many employers prefer or require a high school diploma, valid driver’s license, and Tire Industry Association (TIA) certification.
Work Environment
- Technicians primarily work in tire shops, automotive dealerships, and repair centers.
- Some roles involve working as a mobile or commercial tire technician, which requires traveling to service sites or performing roadside repairs in varying weather conditions.
