TIG Pipe Tack Welder

Shop Tacker – The TIG Pipe Tack Welder welds together metal components of products using the TIG process. This position does not pay per diem.

Requirements

• Successfully pass the on-site TIG Pipe Tack Welder Test: GTAW 6G (1/4 inch wall). The tacker test consists of:
  • Fitting up and welding out a 4" Sch. 40 pipe—TIG all the way in the 6G (45 degree) position.
  • The inspector will check fit and tacks after root pass, after hot pass, and when the test is complete.
  • 3-hour time limit once the coupon is tacked and in the 6G position.

Responsibilities

• Manually guide electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
• Obtain specified electrode and insert into portable holder or thread consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
• Connect cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse as specified by Welding Engineer.
• Start power supply to produce electric current.
• Strike arc to generate heat, deposit metal from electrode to work piece, and join edges of work piece.
• Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
• Clean or degrease weld joint or work piece using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath.
• Repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes.
• Prepare broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
• Chip off excess weld, slag, and spatter using hand scraper or power chipper.
• Preheat work piece using hand torch or heating furnace.
• Position and clamp work pieces together or assemble them in jig or fixture.
• Tack assemblies together.
• Cut metal plates or structural shapes.
• Pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards of governmental agencies or professional and technical associations.
• Perform only jobs on which you have been trained and/or authorized.
• Work in accordance with safe job practices and comply with company safety rules.
• Use required personal protective equipment.
• Report unsafe conditions or practices.
• Cooperate during investigation of any accidents that occur.
• Participate in safety meetings, pre-job safety briefings, task hazard analyses, and Job Safety Analyses.
• Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the welding field.
• Rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform job functions.
• Work under minimum supervision; typically report to a supervisor.
