Threat Emulation Engineer IV
About the role
The Threat Emulation Engineer role is an introductory position within Red Teams, focusing on developing foundational skills in adversary tradecraft replication and assessment execution.
Responsibilities
- Research and reproduce adversary techniques in a test environment.
- Build and run tests that replicate specific adversary techniques.
- Document the tests, including what was built, how it was run, and the organization's defenses' responses.
- Collaborate with partner teams during Threat Detection Assessments (TDAs).
- Participate in Threat Response Exercises (TRXs) and Threat Emulation Operations (TEOs).
- Present work to peers and partner teams, ask questions when necessary, and incorporate feedback.
- Work closely with Threat Intelligence, Threat Response, and Threat Detection teams.
Requirements
- 7 years of experience in security operations, IT, systems administration, software engineering, penetration testing, academic study, self-directed learning, or other technical backgrounds.
- Operating system fundamentals, including process execution, authentication, privilege models, and system events.
- Basic networking concepts, such as common protocols and client-server interactions.
- Familiarity with scripting or programming in at least one language.
- Exposure to command-line tools and system administration tasks.
- Understanding of basic security concepts, including access control, logging, and common attack patterns.
- Ability to learn independently and engage with unfamiliar technical material.
- Experience producing written technical material.
- Interest in adversary tradecraft, capture-the-flag competitions, Hack The Box, or similar platforms.
Qualifications
- No prior Red Team or offensive security experience is required.
- Equivalent experience gained through professional work, independent study, home lab environments, research projects, or other hands-on technical learning is equally valued.
Skills
- Adversary tradecraft replication and assessment execution.
- Collaboration with Threat Intelligence, Threat Response, and Threat Detection teams.
- Technical communication and presentation skills.
