About the role
This position works among a team manufacturing Photonics products for our customers while providing guidance for less experienced team members. The role entails functions such as kitting, operating machines, and in-process measurements. Although based in Newton, NJ, occasional duties may be required at other Thorlabs locations.
Responsibilities
- Able to work in a production area with high-degree-of-difficulty processes
- Prepare raw materials and work for processing
- Perform daily maintenance and upkeep of assigned machines
- Advanced operation to set up, load, unload, and operate thin-film coating vacuum deposition equipment
- Utilize technologies such as resistive, electron beam, ion assist, and sputtering to work on glass and crystal materials to produce coatings (e.g., anti-reflection, beamsplitters, mirrors, and filters)
- Set up, measure, and analyze parts using metrology devices (e.g., hand tools, microscopes, spectrophotometers, FTIRs, transmission setups, ellipsometers, and film stress tools)
- Troubleshoot and resolve process issues
- Participate in process development projects with Engineering
- Train less experienced team members
- Cross-train to work in multiple production areas
- Handle and clean specialty fiber optics, precision optics, and mechanical components
- Sort and count parts and materials
- Examine parts and materials for defects
- Understand written work instructions and technical drawings to manufacture products to the highest quality standards with zero scrap or rework
- Maintain proper records in our Manufacturing Database
- Participate in Continuous Improvement efforts
- Comply with the company safety program and maintain a clean and organized work area
- Meet company standards for quantity and quality of work performed
- Adhere to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding workplace behavior
Requirements
Physical Activities
- Work may be active, involving standing or sitting for long durations and/or performing repetitious tasks
- May lift or move objects up to 20 pounds
- Must grasp, manipulate, or assemble small parts and components
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be noisy at times
- Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments
- Safe handling and processing of chemicals (e.g., adhesives, lubricants, solvents) and safe operation of job-related equipment and tools
Qualifications
- Minimum of 7 years of manufacturing experience and related technical education
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and comply with high-quality standards
- Strong work ethic and attention to detail
- Ability to shift between tasks to address changing production priorities
- Basic mathematic knowledge
- Proficient in basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office)
Pay
The hourly rate for this position is $20.00 - $24.15, depending on experience.
