About the Role

United Launch Alliance is seeking a Thermodynamics Engineer to join our team in Centennial, Colorado. The successful candidate will be a key member of a world-class team designing and analyzing ULA's Atlas V and Vulcan launch vehicle systems, as well as supporting the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS), an integral part of NASA's Space Launch System (SLS).

Responsibilities

  • Develop approaches, methodologies, and tools to solve complex system problems using analytical modeling, empirical, and semi-empirical approaches.
  • Perform conceptual and detailed thermal analysis for the launch vehicle booster, upper stage, and launch facility at both the component and systems levels.
  • Conduct analyses for pre-launch, ascent, and on-orbit phases of flight to verify rocket designs operate within prescribed temperature limitations and define thermal protection systems where needed.
  • Define, monitor, and control requirements related to design, development, and operation of complex launch systems.
  • Develop procedures and plans for thermal test programs when existing analytical capabilities are insufficient.
  • Resolve thermal issues arising during operational use in the field, production, and launch operations.
  • Develop analysis process improvements to reduce cost and risk and/or improve vehicle performance.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Educational background must include relevant coursework in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer.
  • Interest in heat transfer, energy balances, thermal system design, and analysis.
  • Ability to verify analysis results through heat transfer hand calculations and energy balances.
  • Ability to solve difficult problems by applying basic engineering and scientific principles and concepts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well with others.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Tools, CAD tools such as AutoCAD, and MATLAB.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Problem solver able to work independently but recognizing when to seek guidance.
  • Ability to quickly understand and become proficient with various thermal analysis software tools and associated computer programs.
  • Working knowledge or basic understanding of Thermal Desktop and SINDA.

Pay

Salary range: $70,952.00 - $118,253.00. Salaries are based on candidate experience, qualifications, internal equity, market, and business considerations. Employees may be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus in addition to base pay.

Schedule

Standard weekly hours: 40.00.
