This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. To further our mission, we are building sustainable infrastructure for transporting crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

About the role

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to use their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to join the MK1 Lunar Lander team and positively impact safe spaceflight. The first MK1 Lunar Lander, christened “Endurance,” will be the largest and most complex vehicle ever to land on the moon. Our second MK1 will deliver NASA’s VIPER rover to the Lunar south pole, and NASA recently selected Blue Origin to fly two more MK1 landers to deliver Lunar Terrain Vehicles. Passion for our mission and vision is required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare design layouts, create detail part and assembly drawings/MBDs, and release data sets using CAD and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools.
  • Create and review engineering drawings and designs to ensure alignment to established specifications and standards.
  • Support engineering teams in the development with mechanical layout and detail design and drawing for structural detail parts and assemblies.
  • Apply relevant company (design, drafting, parts) techniques to plan, layout, and maintain data depicting engineering designs (detail, assembly, and installation drawings or datasets).
  • Implement engineering and manufacturing standard methodologies to achieve a balanced approach to cost, schedule, and performance requirements.
  • Work with multi-functional teams responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce world-class aerospace hardware.
  • Design active thermal hardware (tubing, radiators, coldplates, pump assemblies, etc.) and/or passive thermal hardware (multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets, Thermal Protection Systems (TPS), etc.).
  • Perform trades with vehicle-level and subsystem design teams to enable fabrication and integration of component parts.
  • Design for manufacturability.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering and 5+ years of related experience.
  • Strong mechanical design skills using Creo.
  • Proficiency in drawing generation and release processes using Creo Parametric and Windchill.
  • Proficiency in standard fits, tolerance stacks, and GD&T analysis (ASME Y14.5).
  • Experience managing large CAD assemblies, BOMs, ICMs, and skeletons.
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and developing designs to produce world-class engineered products.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years of related experience.
  • Experience releasing engineering data sets using Model Based Definition.
  • Experience with material selection, compatibility, and metallic manufacturing techniques & product forms (composites, sheet metal, machining, etc.).
  • Demonstrated expertise with industry-standard analysis codes: Ansys, Nastran, Optistruct, LS Dyna, Hypermesh, Hypersizer.
  • Experience with rapid development techniques for hardware.

Pay

  • CA applicants: $121,023.00 - $169,432.20
  • CO applicants: $110,938.00 - $155,312.85
  • WA applicants: $121,023.00 - $169,432.20
  • Other site ranges may differ.
