Thermal Engineer II

Blue Origin is working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products, building sustainable infrastructure for transporting crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.
About the role
As part of a diverse and hardworking team of engineers, you will contribute to the definition and development of spacecraft thermal control systems. You will work directly with NASA and National Team Partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS). This role involves responsibility for the delivery and integration of thermal components across the Blue Moon Crew Lander, including Active Thermal Control System component delivery, integration, and verification efforts, as well as supporting design efforts.
You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced and often uncertain environment, contributing to innovative solutions while demonstrating personal leadership, technical competence, and attention to detail.
Responsibilities
- Deliver and integrate thermal components for the Blue Moon Crew Lander as part of the HLS Crew Lander Thermal Systems Engineering Vehicle Team.
- Oversee Active Thermal Control System component delivery, integration, and verification efforts.
- Support Active Thermal Control System design efforts.
- Perform basic thermal analysis using hand calculations.
- Assemble and test hardware.
- Work with aerospace hardware verification and validation processes.
- Design, build, and test fluid routing systems and associated components.
Requirements
- Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
- 3+ years of relevant Thermal Engineering or Mechanical Engineering experience.
- Demonstrated experience assembling and testing hardware.
- Understanding of aerospace hardware verification and validation processes.
- Familiarity with common spacecraft Active Thermal Control hardware such as cold plates, heat exchangers, valves, radiators, tubing, fittings, and working fluids.
- Experience with CAD software, preferably Creo.
- U.S. citizenship or national, U.S. permanent residency (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
- 5+ years of relevant aerospace experience.
- Solid understanding of pumped fluid loop hardware (tubing, cold plates, radiators, valves, heat exchangers) and semi-passive devices like sensors and heaters.
- Experience with Thermal Desktop and Sinda/Fluint.
- Highly self-motivated with strong organizational and written/oral communication skills.
- Able to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment, including frequent interactions with engineers, managers, and program leadership.
- Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Pay
- Base pay range for CO applicants: $98,208.00 - $137,491.20.
- Base pay range for WA applicants: $107,136.00 - $149,990.40.
