Therapeutic Recreation Internship

About the role

Support and facilitate therapeutic interventions targeting social and emotional development. Learn to create individualized goals and program plans. Assist in refining program procedures and administrative duties to enhance service quality.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate activities for After School, Release Days, Adventure Night Out, Summer Adventure, Venture Forward, and Destination…Anywhere!
  • Collaborate with families, school staff, and community partners to implement programming meeting unique needs.
  • Audit and update each client’s plan of care to ensure accuracy and relevance.
  • Achieve leadership and collaborative goals, contributing innovative ideas and enhancing program quality.
  • Maintain safety and monitor the well-being of participants, ensuring their rights are upheld.
  • Engage participants in group settings and promote community involvement through active participation and positive behaviors.
  • Ensure participant safety in the community and maintain open communication and emotional regulation.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and acceptable driving record.
  • Currently enrolled in a university earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a related field.
  • Ability to use clear and understandable written and verbal English.
  • Ability to manage and communicate effectively with participants, including those with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
  • Good organizational and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

  • Desired: First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • No prior experience with people with disabilities required; a willingness to learn is essential.
  • Experience with individuals with disabilities highly desirable.

Pay

Unpaid Internship

Schedule

40 Hours/Week
Seasonal Internship (14-16 consecutive weeks)

  • Fall (Sept- Dec): M-F 10:00 am-6:00 pm
  • Spring (Jan-Apr): M-F 10:00 am-6:00 pm
  • Summer (May-Aug): M-F 8:30 am-4:30 pm

Weekend hours: 1-2 weekends

Preferred Application Window

  • April & May
  • September & October
  • February & March

Internship Length

  • 14-16 Weeks
