Theater Teacher (Secondary) - General Pool (2026-27 SY)

About the role

The Secondary Theater Teacher is responsible for developing students' artistic skills through the implementation of district-approved curriculum. The position involves documenting teaching and student progress, developing lesson plans, and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration.

Responsibilities

• Administers subject-specific assessments and tests to assess students' competencies.
• Advises parents and/or legal guardians on student progress, including communication of expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement.
• Affirms student progress towards objectives, expectations, and goals (such as artistic skills and abilities).
• Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources to enhance overall student outcomes and achieve classroom objectives.
• Counsels students to improve their performance, health status, problem-solving techniques, and personal issues.
• Demonstrates methods to perform classroom and/or subject-specific assignments to provide an effective program addressing individual student requirements.
• Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers to ensure an effective classroom program and meet individual student needs.
• Evaluates routes (such as bus stops and clock schedules) to ensure compliance with school safety schedules, policies, and mandated guidelines.
• Instructs students on various art-related activities (such as crafts, drawing, painting, design) and the proper use of equipment, tools, and supplies.
• Maintains a safe and optimal learning environment by managing student behavior and monitoring students in different educational settings.
• Participates in meetings to convey and gather information needed to perform functions.
• Plans art displays and exhibitions to showcase student artwork.
• Prepares written materials (such as grades, attendance records, anecdotal records) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
• Reports incidents (such as fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain personal safety, provide a positive learning environment, and adhere to education codes and school policies.
• Responds to emergencies to resolve immediate safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.
• Responds to inquiries from various sources (such as other teachers, parents, administrators) to resolve issues, provide information, and/or direction.
• Supports classroom teachers in the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plans.

Qualifications

• Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a job-related field.
• Master’s degree preferred.
• Valid Virginia Department of Education License in PreK-12 Theater Arts or ability to obtain one.
