Testing & Commissioning Engineer I

Due to continued growth, TRC Field Services (FSV) is seeking Commissioning Technicians to support Client Teams across the Mid-Atlantic region. With a staff of over 200 experienced utility and industrial commissioning engineers and test technicians, TRC delivers comprehensive, cost-effective solutions safely to Electric Utility Customers while providing industry-leading training programs, mentorship, and growth opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate, perform, and document all commissioning activities (pre-commissioning, construction, testing, commissioning, energization, project close-out) of utility substation protection, control, and power circuits in accordance with TRC’s and Client’s requirements, budgets, and schedules.
• Review wiring diagrams, schematics, and engineering documents in advance of projects and outages.
• Perform troubleshooting and problem analysis associated with protection and control systems and utility substation equipment, including:
  • Application errors and omissions
  • Drawing errors and omissions
  • Wiring errors and omissions
  • Settings errors and omissions
  • Equipment malfunctions
  • Questionable apparatus test results
  • Battery ground faults
• Participate in project meetings including kickoff, planning, progress, and lessons-learned meetings.
• Prepare detailed daily, weekly, and project completion reports documenting project progress, issues, recommendations, test results, and analyses.
• Assist in developing project-specific testing and commissioning plans, energization plans, or other assigned documentation.
• Identify risks and mitigation techniques for utility systems and equipment. Develop Site Risk Assessments to document high-risk activities and formalize circuit isolation and restoration processes ensuring safety and preventing unintended operations.
• Ensure all applicable tests and commissioning activities are performed on every piece of equipment or system per planning and project documents. Verify all test results are acceptable, permanently recorded, filed, and distributed properly.
• Develop, review, and approve detailed test reports for various types of electrical equipment.

Requirements

• 3+ years of related experience with testing and commissioning services (Electric Utility experience preferred but will train candidates with experience in commissioning complex commercial-industrial equipment, including protective relays or other Power Systems Field Engineers with relay knowledge).
• Demonstrated ability to read and understand construction and manufacturer’s drawings, specifications, and schematic diagrams.
• Strong knowledge of (or ability to learn) electrical protection systems, including relay communication.
• Basic understanding of (or ability to learn) AC and DC schematics, wiring, drawings, one-line, and three-line interconnection diagrams.
• Prior professional experience in (or ability to learn quickly) medium and high-voltage substation and power plant equipment. Ability to perform basic apparatus testing and interpret test results with supervision.
• Solid testing and commissioning knowledge of (or ability to learn quickly) substation utility protection and control circuits. Ability to perform commissioning activities and interpret results with supervision.
• Basic knowledge of and ability to learn commissioning methods to accurately conduct and document commissioning activities.
• Test experience using Doble Protection Suite, Protest, SEL AcSELerator, or Enoserv RTS is highly preferred.
• Current US work eligibility is required.
• Valid USA driver’s license issued by state of residence and in good standing.
• Availability for out-of-town travel of up to several weeks at a time.
• Availability to work flexible hours, weekends, overtime, holidays, and night shifts.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to negotiate effectively with clients and team members.

Pay

Salary Range: USD $40.00 - USD $53.00 per hour.

Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company’s annual Discretionary Bonus Program, contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators.
