About the role

The Geology Department at San José State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Geophysics beginning August 17, 2027. We seek a geophysicist whose research interests and expertise align with seismology, tectonics, geodynamics, and/or geophysical exploration. The department is ideally positioned for research and collaboration, including opportunities with the USGS, and offers new programs such as a BS in Computer Science & Geology and an MS in Computational Geoscience. The department emphasizes hands-on learning and a collegial environment.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in geophysics and related subjects, including introductory geology, writing in geology, field methods, and graduate seminars
  • Develop and maintain an active research program in geophysics, pursuing internal and external funding
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, including advising and serving on MS committees in Geology and Computational Geoscience
  • Participate in shared governance through department, college, and university committees
  • Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System
  • Demonstrate awareness and experience in meeting the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive teaching strategies and advisement

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Geology or a related field with an emphasis on Geophysics by the date of appointment
  • Evidence of established scholarly output and a robust research program within Geophysics
  • Demonstrated potential for and dedication to superior instruction and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior teaching experience, particularly in Geophysics
  • Demonstrated potential to secure external grants to support research and enrich student experiences
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
