Essential Job Duties

  • Design and deliver a week-long program for campers (ages 8–14) at Millstone 4-H Camp focused on mental health and healthy relationships, in collaboration with an NCSU faculty member.
  • Provide brief group interactions with campers addressing mental health topics such as depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and relationship health.
  • Respond to youth in behavioral distress or experiencing interpersonal conflict, including after-hours support during active camp weeks.
  • Support and build capacity among camp staff to recognize and respond to low-intensity mental health needs of campers.
  • Assist the camp program director in planning and delivering staff training on mental health first aid and conflict resolution.
  • Collect and analyze program evaluation data, and prepare and present a brief program report.
  • Opportunity for graduate students in clinical mental health programs to receive clinical supervision for individual and relational client hours.
  • Collaborate with training programs to ensure academic credit where applicable.
  • Potential to return for a second summer.

Internship Timeline

  • 4 weeks (remote/hybrid) at NCSU for program preparation and planning.
  • 6 weeks on-site at Millstone 4-H Camp working with staff and campers.
  • 2 weeks for program evaluation, report preparation, and presentation.

About Millstone 4-H Camp

Millstone 4-H Camp offers a 6-day residential experience for youth featuring activities such as canoeing, kayaking, crafts, swimming, hiking, field games, ropes courses, and shooting sports (archery, riflery, shotguns), supported by caring and qualified staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Current enrollment in a Master’s or Doctoral program in a Clinical Mental Health program.
  • Basic clinical counseling/therapy skills to administer mental health first aid.
  • Foundational knowledge of brief mental health education and relationship education programs.
  • Ability to gather and consolidate research to support adolescent mental and relationship health program planning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with youth in mental health or behavioral contexts.

Required Skills

  • Ability to address mental health topics including dating, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.
  • Conflict resolution and relationship health facilitation.

Required License or Certification

  • Eligible for licensure or working toward accruing clinical hours for licensure eligibility.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license not required.

Compensation

  • $5,000 stipend.
  • $900 travel stipend.
  • Room and board provided during on-site stay at Millstone Camp.

Work Schedule

  • Off-camp weeks (6): 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, flexible schedule.
  • On-camp weeks (6): daytime hours plus after-hours response as needed.
