Responsibilities

• Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate water flow into the treatment plant and monitors operational gauges.
• Tests water samples to determine pH, iron, manganese, free chlorine, and turbidity using pH meter, colorimeter, and turbidimeter.
• Records data such as water flow meters, chlorine feed rate settings, turbidity, and other lab tests.
• Injects specified amounts of chemicals like chlorine and potassium permanganate into water and makes necessary feed rate adjustments based on water quality changes.
• Mixes potassium permanganate and replenishes solution barrels as needed.
• Pumps clarified and disinfected water into storage tanks and distribution mains.
• Monitors panel boards and adjusts controls to regulate flow rates and water storage tank levels.
• Backwashes filters when head loss is between 6 - 10 psi or at least every 96 hours.
• Repairs and lubricates machinery and equipment using hand and power tools.
• Operates a portable water purification plant during emergency contingencies.
• Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings at the wastewater treatment lagoon, and tests results to determine load requirements.
• Maintains wastewater treatment logs of operations and records flow meter readings.
• Collects sewage samples, uses dipper or bottle, and conducts laboratory tests using pH meter and dissolved oxygen meter.
• Sets up and collects influent and effluent samples from automatic composite samplers for BOD and TSS analysis at off-site labs.
• Wears proper personal protective equipment for tasks being conducted.
• Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications

• Mandatory: High school diploma or equivalent.
• State of Alaska Level II Water Treatment Operations Certificate or ability to reciprocate from another state, showing proof of reciprocity prior to hire.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to pass National Agency Check with Inquiries.
• Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment physical, background check, fingerprint, and drug test.

Pay

The salary offered will depend on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, skills, education, geographic location, internal equity, business needs, and other factors permitted by law.

Schedule

This Temporary position is a rotational schedule with 3 months on-site at Eareckson Air Station and 1 month off, unpaid. Housing is provided as a dormitory facility, and all meals are served through the cafeteria. Transportation to EAS from Anchorage, AK, is provided by government-sponsored aircraft. The position lasts for one 3-month rotation.
