Temporary Technician (Bier)
About the role
This position is for a PhD-level aquatic macroinvertebrate researcher with extensive experience working on macroinvertebrate communities and water quality in the Savannah and Ogeechee Rivers during flood and drought conditions. The researcher will use these skills to evaluate previously collected data sets to understand differences in aquatic health with changing water levels in these rivers.
Responsibilities
- Data analysis and interpretation from literature on river biotic and abiotic conditions (40% of time)
- Creation of figures from data analysis and report writing (40% of time)
- Tracking project activities for reporting and presenting results to stakeholders (15% of time)
- Field and laboratory work including preparing sampling kits, microscopy, and conducting stream measurements (5% of time)
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD in Aquatic Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field
- Extensive experience working on macroinvertebrate communities and water quality in the Savannah and Ogeechee Rivers during flood and drought conditions
- Experience using statistical software for data analysis
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication and presentation skills
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:
- Expertise in aquatic macroinvertebrate ecology
- Experience with water quality monitoring and analysis
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in hot and humid conditions and perform physical labor
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Physical Demands
Field work that includes hot and humid conditions with biting insects in the summer and cold temperatures in the winter. Tasks may include wading into streams and wetlands, carrying equipment to the field sites (distance can be around a mile), lifting heavy objects (>50 lbs), and repetitive motions such as for pipetting. Driving as needed for job duties.
