(Temporary/Substitute) Motor Pool Driver Technician

About the Role

The Shasta College Physical Plant department is seeking to build a pool of qualified applicants for substitute/temporary driver work. This position involves transporting students on field trips or to other sites within designated routes, ensuring the safety of student passengers while operating a District bus or van. Additionally, this role assists the Motor Pool Mechanic/Foreperson with maintenance and repairs on District vehicles and equipment. Frequent overtime, weekend hours, and overnight stays are required, along with interstate and intrastate travel.

Responsibilities

  • Drives District vehicles in accordance with trip schedules; transports students and instructors on field trips to various locations, which may require overnight stays; plans necessary routes and stops; adheres to arrival and departure times.
  • Transports students and/or instructors with disabilities or service animals in compliance with laws, regulations, and College policy; operates disabled persons bus or van as required.
  • Maintains order and proper discipline of passengers according to District policy; enforces bus riding rules; provides safety/emergency instructions.
  • Conducts safety and operational inspections of assigned bus prior to trips; reports mechanical repairs; performs basic on-the-road repairs and emergency road calls.
  • Performs safety and operational inspections of oil, coolant, belts, tires, and batteries; assists with diagnostic interpretation using state-of-the-art equipment.
  • Installs chains on buses or vans when road conditions require it.
  • Completes mileage, safety, and other reports, including passenger counts; maintains daily driver’s log in compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Performs routine servicing of District vehicles and equipment, including oil changes, lubrication, battery maintenance, tire repairs, and replacing components like water pumps, belts, hoses, lamps, and brakes.
  • Services lavatory-equipped vehicles, including dumping and refilling toilet systems, cleaning surfaces, restocking, and emptying refuse; washes District vehicles as needed.
  • Assists the Motor Pool Mechanic/Foreperson with major tune-ups, repairs, overhauls, and preventative maintenance on District vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Assists with fleet recordkeeping, including tracking preventative maintenance, vehicle history, and upcoming scheduled repairs using fleet management software.
  • Performs State and Federally-mandated inspections on commercial vehicles; prepares required records and documents to comply with laws and regulations.
  • Assists in identifying needed parts for repairs and estimating costs for electrical, air, cooling, or mechanical systems.
  • Participates in maintaining and organizing the shop, parts room, and tools to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • A valid and current unrestricted Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with a passenger endorsement, without an airbrake restriction.
  • Experience in auto and small engine repair; experience or training in heavy-duty vehicle and equipment repair.
  • Enrollment in the District’s drug and alcohol testing program and the DMV employee pull notice program.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe:
    • A valid and current Medical Certificate.
    • A valid and current school bus certificate (within 150 days of hire, funded by the District).
    • A valid and current CPR card (within 150 days of hire, funded by the District).
    • Proper certification to operate all District equipment (e.g., forklift, scissor lift, bucket truck).
  • A safe driving record.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and compliance with:
    • The California Vehicle Code, California State Education Code, California Code of Regulations, Code of Federal Regulations, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Department of Transportation, and District policies related to vehicle operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in preventative maintenance, inspection, and repair of District vehicles and equipment.
  • Understanding of safe work practices, safe driving practices, and operation of heavy-duty commercial equipment.
  • Basic first aid practices, procedures, and techniques.
  • Ability to:
    • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions independently.
    • Establish and maintain proper student and instructor conduct while in a District vehicle.
    • Maintain a safe driving record and safely operate any District transportation vehicle.
    • Exercise good judgment and extreme caution while driving.
    • Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties.
    • Safely use and operate tools, machines, and equipment associated with the mechanic trade.
    • Assist with diagnosing and repairing a variety of vehicles and mechanical malfunctions.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties.
    • Work with or without direct supervision.
    • Work at heights in excess of ten feet.
    • Operate a two-way radio and all District equipment, including buses, forklifts, trucks, and truck combination vehicles.
    • Use an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) to maintain records of driver’s hours.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as staff and students with physical and/or learning disabilities.

Schedule

Frequent overtime and weekend hours with overnight stays required. Interstate and intrastate travel is also required.
