Under the supervision of the school principal, responsible for the instruction, progress, and discipline of all pupils in assigned classes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement instructional planning, including written lesson plans aligned with the objectives of the instructional program.
  • Establish positive learning expectation standards for all pupils and evaluate their progress while maintaining accurate records of achievements.
  • Apply contemporary principles of learning theory and teaching methodology, utilizing available instructional materials.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new teaching techniques.
  • Create bulletin boards and interest areas reflective of pupils' current work.
  • Exhibit and apply knowledge of curriculum content related to subject areas and instructional level.
  • Participate in programs to improve student attendance and promote anti-vandalism initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain reasonable rules of conduct in classrooms, playgrounds, corridors, and lunchrooms, consistent with the Chicago Public Schools' Uniform Discipline Code.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and seating charts.
  • Encourage student growth in self-discipline and positive self-concept.
  • Ensure fairness in teacher-pupil relationships and exhibit understanding and respect for students.
  • Initiate conferences with parents, guardians, administrators, or ancillary personnel as needed.
  • Communicate with parents or guardians regarding pupils' academic progress, attendance, and conduct.
  • Participate in in-service meetings, professional staff meetings, and use provided information and materials.
  • Coordinate and attend class field trips as needed.
  • Engage in extra-curricular and after-school activities.
  • Utilize appropriate community resources.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and coursework required for the appropriate teaching certificate(s) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Possess at least one of the following valid teaching licenses issued by the Illinois State Board of Education: Professional Educator License (PEL) or Educator License with Stipulations (ELS), properly endorsed for this position.

  • Knowledge of classroom and behavior management techniques.
  • Ability to modify instruction to meet student needs.
  • Ability to cooperate with school faculty and administration in developing and implementing an articulated program of instruction.
  • Ability to work effectively with pupils, parents, guardians, staff, and community representatives.
  • Ability to understand the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional patterns of pupils.
  • Skill in applying contemporary principles and practices of teaching.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and sound professional judgment.

Physical Requirements

  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 10 pounds frequently, or negligible force constantly.
  • Ability to stoop occasionally, reach frequently, and handle or finger objects occasionally.
  • Constantly required to talk and hear.
  • Frequent use of near visual acuity and occasional use of far visual acuity.

Pay

Salary range: $64,469.94 to $82,839.39.

Primary location: Southwest Side - 6201 South Fairfield Avenue (Fairfield Academy).
