Temporary Library Access Services Team Member

About the role

Under the supervision of the Manager of Access Services, the Cornish Access Services Librarian, and the Lead Evening Technician, this position oversees library facilities and operations during weekend, morning, evening, and opening or closing shifts. Success in this patron-focused role requires strong organizational, communication, and attention-to-detail skills.

Responsibilities

• Securely opens and closes both Lemieux and Cornish Libraries in line with library policies, procedures, and protocols.
• Staffs the circulation desks at both libraries; lends materials and helps students use library collections and technology.
• Performs Access Services functions of varying complexity, including processing institutional and consortial materials correctly.
• Answers informational, directional, and service questions, utilizing equipment and online tracking tools.
• Assists patrons in navigating the library website and locating library materials online and in the building.
• Makes appropriate referrals to other library and campus services as needed.
• Contributes to student employee evaluations and any additional re-training and feedback.
• Provides basic technology assistance and equipment problem solving on Fridays and Saturdays.
• Acts as primary Saturday and secondary Friday contact for Public Safety and Facilities Services for any building or security related issues.
• Coordinates access to library rooms and spaces for events, workshops, and classes.
• Serves as secondary Saturday contact for all building-related questions, concerns or work orders for the Lemieux Library.

Work Schedule

15–20 hours per week over a 10-month contract spanning Fall, Winter, and Spring academic terms (September 1 to June 30). Shifts include one weekend day (Saturday), evening closing shifts (Friday) at Lemieux Library, and one weekday at Cornish Library (floating weekday). The library is open on some legal or university holidays, and staff may be required to work a full or partial shift on such days.

Minimum Qualifications

• Proof of enrollment in an accredited MLIS or ITC program and/or one or more years’ previous library experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience sufficient to perform the essential functions.
• Excellent service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to establish positive rapport with students, faculty, staff, supervisors, library colleagues, and university staff.

• Ability to prioritize and meet expected deadlines, use judgment and analytical skills for problem solving, and seek consultation when appropriate.
• Aptitude to work in a complex setting and to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Competence with Microsoft Office 365 Suite.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull 40 pounds.

• This position requires a criminal history background check.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years’ previous experience working in academic or public libraries, in an access services/circulation role.
• Familiarity with Ex Libris’ Alma/Primo Integrated Library System.
• Familiarity with Alma Analytics, Oracle Analytics, or SQL databases.
• Experience working with or supporting diverse populations.
• Understanding of the Library of Congress classification system.
• Familiarity with library databases and emerging technology.
• Experience leading the work of students.
