Responsibilities
- Perform legal research for attorneys in the Office of General Counsel (OGC) across all practice teams, including matters involving employment law, student affairs, FERPA, Title IX, healthcare compliance, research integrity, real estate and facilities, intellectual property, and procurement.
- Handle contract drafting and reviews independently and as assigned by an attorney in the office, including vendor agreements, affiliation agreements, sponsorship contracts, leases, campus development agreements, and other university-wide transactional matters.
- Respond to public records requests. Work closely with the paralegal to review exemptions and determine how to respond to requests.
- Assist with subpoenas, garnishments, and bankruptcy notices.
- Support attorneys across the OGC's practice teams by assisting with matters such as employment-related issues, student affairs, HIPAA compliance, research misconduct, technology transfer, and intellectual property as needed.
- Assist with compliance support, FIU regulation administration, and monitor developments in higher education law, including updates to state statutes, federal regulations, and relevant case law.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited Law School
- Recent graduate of FIU law school (within the last 2 calendar years) and a Florida law license
- Excellent legal research, analytical, writing, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and assignments effectively while working on multiple and competing priorities simultaneously
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including the ability to work cooperatively and function successfully in a team-oriented, fast-paced work environment with both attorneys and staff
- Demonstrated interest in or exposure to areas relevant to a large public university legal practice such as labor & employment, student affairs and privacy, healthcare, research and technology transfer, real estate, intellectual property, or related fields
