About the role

NDS is a national nonprofit public defense organization that provides client-centered legal representation through interdisciplinary teams. The role is temporary and full-time, union eligible, and exempt from FLSA. The position reports to the Managing Attorney for the Immigration Defense Team.

Responsibilities

  • Support for motions to reopen/reconsider, appeals, and habeas practice
  • Direct representation of removal defense/affirmative cases
  • Representation of clients in immigration proceedings
  • Legal research and writing, including drafting pre-pleading letters, motions, and memoranda
  • Coordination of work with team members and criminal defense attorneys
  • Filing federal litigation and appeals, including Petitions for Review and habeas petitions
  • Engaging in community-oriented know-your-rights and outreach
  • Policy work and attending coalition meetings
  • Effective oral advocacy in negotiations and arguments

Requirements

  • Experience in special litigation, including drafting and arguing in federal district court
  • Interest in immigration advocacy and holistic defense of noncitizens
  • Commitment to criminal and immigration justice, indigent defense, racial equity, and social justice issues
  • Substantive understanding of immigration procedure
  • Strategic guidance and good judgment in casework and projects
  • High level of organizational and administrative skills
  • Clear and effective communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting
  • License to practice law in New York or another state

Qualifications

  • 1-5 years experience representing clients in immigration proceedings
  • Knowledge of immigration procedure
  • Strategic guidance and good judgment in casework and projects
  • Routine pushing through roadblocks to achieve goals
  • High level of organizational and administrative skills
  • Clear and effective communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting
  • Licenses to practice law in New York or another state

Benefits

Full medical and dental benefits, as well as other benefits, are provided. The salary, benefits, and employment policies relevant to this position are governed by the CBA between NDS and the NDS Union, part of ALAA UAW 2325. The position will end one year after the start date of employment.

Pay

USD $84,347.74/Yr. USD $94,201.77/Yr.
