About the role

Under the guidance of the classroom teacher, the Instructional Assistant provides essential support with the implementation of the instructional program. Independent judgment is required and the role involves the protection of sensitive and confidential information.

Responsibilities

  • Assists students with academic subjects—may assist students one-on-one, in small groups, or whole class depending on individual qualifications; documents progress
  • Assists teachers with classroom duties, including correcting work, recording grades, planning work, and administering tests
  • Assists with classroom management and behavior modification
  • Assists with field trips, community-based instruction, and other activities
  • May assist with toileting students, changing diapers and general hygiene; may be required to handle seizures and other physical complications; handles various complicated positioning equipment; evaluates pain and discomfort levels; evaluates responses to stimuli
  • Assists students with mobility needs such as lifting and positioning students, lifting in and out of wheelchairs, and loading and unloading the bus; operates adaptive equipment
  • May assist with physical therapeutic training, including range of motion skills, fine motor skills, visual perception and social skills
  • Collects data on student performance and progress
  • Assists with creation, organization, and distribution of instructional materials
  • Reports student concerns directly and promptly to the teacher and assists with student resolution
  • Assists with implementation of behavior management plans
  • Assists students on and off the school bus; supervises students at lunch, recess and in the absence of teachers
  • Assists with breakfast, lunch and snack, including clean-up
  • May be required to assist with student’s medical and personal hygiene needs
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Must hold a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Sixty semester hours of college credit or passing scores on the ParaPro Assessment preferred
  • Paraprofessional Autism Certification is required within 60 days of hire (training provided by HCPS at no cost)

Schedule

This position is temporary working no more than 29 hours per week. Schedule will be determined by the building principal.
