About the role

This is a term-limited, 9-month position (40 hours per week, Monday–Friday) without benefits. The Collections Storage Assistant will work with the Associate Registrar and Collections Manager to maintain and operate History Colorado’s offsite storage facility, including preparing deaccessions, completing inventories, creating permanent storage for new collections, and other collections management tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Complete an auction for deaccessioned materials from the 2016 deaccession audit and recent 2025/2026 deaccessions.
  • Prepare large volumes of books for deaccession and removal.
  • Inventory oversize boxes and slot racks in the High Bay storage space and prepare items for transport.
  • Conduct research into potential deaccessioned materials.
  • Create custom housing and permanent storage for Found in Collection and accessioned materials on the large rolling rack at North Storage.
  • Find permanent housing for the new National Guard Collection.
  • Assist with storage reconfiguration and movement of collections.
  • Perform other Collections Management and Registration tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Six (6) years of professional experience in collections management, museum registration, archives, or a closely related field.
  • OR a Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, History, Art History, Library Science (or related field) plus two (2) years of professional experience.
  • OR a Master’s degree in Museum Studies, History, Art History, Library Science (or related field) plus one (1) year of professional experience.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs on a regular basis.

Skills

  • Experience handling, storing, and managing large collections or high volumes of activity at a medium to large institution.
  • Proficiency with collections management databases, metadata standards, and cataloging standards (experience with Argus preferred).
  • Knowledge of museum collection standards, conservation practices, and agents of deterioration (theft, fire, water, temperature, pests, light, contaminants, etc.).
  • Experience conducting detailed inventories and recording data in spreadsheets.
  • Understanding of museum deaccession best practices and theory.
  • Experience with provenance and artifact research.
  • Strong storage organization skills and ability to determine best housing techniques.
  • Self-direction, motivation, and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication and cooperation with museum staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven application of collections management skills in inventory, survey, and project-based work.
  • High proficiency with collections management databases.
  • Experience in project management, meeting deadlines, and flexible multi-tasking.
