Temporary Biologist - Sea Turtle, Rescue & Rehabilitation

Join the New England Aquarium's Rescue & Rehabilitation team and provide medical care to stranded sea turtles at our Animal Care Center in Quincy, MA. Free parking is available on-site. Comprehensive COVID-19 safety protocols are in place, and all staff must be vaccinated and boosted unless a reasonable accommodation is approved.

About the role

This is a 3-month, temporary position with a regular schedule of 40 hours per week. Typical hours are 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, but flexibility to work varied hours and days of the week is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform husbandry duties in the sea turtle hospital.
  • Train volunteer teams.
  • Provide care and treatments to cold-stunned sea turtles.
  • Respond to hotline calls when appropriate.
  • Manage the stranding database and other administrative tasks.
  • Assist with health assessments and medical procedures, including animal restraint.
  • Support reporting requirements and other administrative responsibilities.
  • Assist with necropsies as needed.
  • Maintain records and databases.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience.
  • Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and comfort driving larger non-commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to work in 55°F temperatures for long periods, stand for extended durations, lift up to 50 lbs from the floor, and perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching.

Skills

  • Experience with cold-stunned sea turtles preferred.
  • Veterinary Technician skills preferred, including wound care, injections, drawing blood, and other basic clinical procedures.
